When Someone Else’s Words Stick Around (AKA The Bully)

How hypnotherapy can help you move beyond the effects of bullying

Most of us think of bullying as something that happens at school, but sadly, it can happen at any age. It can come from classmates, work colleagues, family members, partners, or even strangers through social media. It can tear up families beyond repair.

And even if the bullying stops, the effects often don’t.

Many people are surprised to discover that years later they’re still hearing those old messages in their own heads:
“I’m not good enough.”
“People are judging me.”
“I’d better stay quiet.”

The good news is that those thoughts don’t have to stay with you forever.

Meet Emma…
Emma (not her real name) came to see me because she lacked confidence at work. She knew her job well, but whenever she had to speak in meetings, she froze. Afterwards she’d replay every word she’d said, convinced she’d sounded silly.

As we talked, she remembered being bullied at school. A small group of students constantly teased her whenever she spoke up. Before long, she learned that keeping quiet felt safer than risking being laughed at.
The strange thing was, Emma was now in her forties. Her school days were long behind her—but her subconscious mind was still trying to protect her in exactly the same way.

Through hypnotherapy, she learned to relax, let go of those old emotional reactions, and replace them with a new belief: “My voice matters.”

After a couple of sessions with me, she was asked to make a team presentation and to her surprise and delight,  she found herself speaking confidently during the presentation. It wasn’t because she’d suddenly become a different person. It was because she’d stopped listening to the old story she’d been carrying around for years.

Our minds are brilliant at learning.
If something painful happens over and over, the subconscious starts looking for ways to keep us safe. Sometimes that means avoiding attention, staying quiet, or expecting criticism before it even happens.
Those patterns may have helped at the time—but they can become unhelpful years later.

So, How Can Hypnotherapy Help?

Hypnotherapy isn’t about forgetting the past or pretending it never happened.
Instead, it’s about changing how your mind responds to those memories.
When you’re deeply relaxed, your subconscious becomes more open to learning new, healthier ways of thinking. Together we can help you:

  • Build confidence and self-belief.
  • Quiet the inner critic.
  • Feel calmer in social situations.
  • Let go of old fears and self-doubt.
  • Feel more comfortable being yourself.
  • Respond with confidence instead of anxiety.

Many people say they feel as though they’ve finally put down a heavy backpack they’ve been carrying for years.
One Last Thought…
The words spoken by a bully often say far more about them than they ever did about you.
You were never defined by their opinions.
If you’ve spent years carrying around someone else’s hurtful comments, perhaps it’s time to leave them where they belong—in the past.
You deserve to feel confident, valued, and free to be yourself.
And sometimes, that’s exactly where hypnotherapy can help.
If you know someone who is still carrying the effects of bullying, or if this story feels a little too familiar, I’d love to help. A single conversation can be the first step towards letting go of the past and moving forward with confidence.

And that is how I seek to help my clients – by instilling in their sub-conscious mind the realisation that there really is light at the end of every tunnel.
